History

Change font size:
In 1970, twenty families began meeting for Sunday brunch at the local clubhouse in an attempt to identify with the small Jewish presence in this new and growing area. This group called themselves the Jewish Community of Neshaminy Valley and these original families formed the Neshaminy Valley Jewish Community Center in 1971.

In 1973, the congregation purchased a ranch house that when renovated provided us with a sanctuary, meeting rooms and classrooms, a kosher kitchen and limited grounds. Along with our first spiritual leader, Rabbi Alan Silverstein, we continued to grow and in 1977 we purchased a 9.3 acre estate which we first used for our expanding Hebrew school.

In 1979 we adopted the name Tifereth Israel and for the High Holidays in 1980 we held services in our new building.

In 1997 we realized our farmhouse, which housed the Judy Sare Nursery School, needed to be closed and we began an expansion campaign which led to the construction of our Judy Sare Education Wing which also houses the Jason Rubin Teen Center.

Congregation Tifereth Israel is the only conservative synagogue in Bensalem. We are affiliated with United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism along with our Men's Club, Sisterhood, and United Synagogue Youth (USY) chapters.

We are proud of our association with Rabbi Jeffery Schnitzer, who began serving as our rabbi in 1998.

We are a vibrant community of over 200 families and we are proud of the programs we run each year including our Scholar-in-Residence, Auction, Comedy Night, and Adult Enrichment programs. We have housed a Kosher Food Bank, which serves the community since 1993, as result of the dedication of our adult Bat Mitzvah class.
